I’m working on memorizing the book of 1 Peter and ever since I finished the first chapter one verse has stood out to me.
“Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.” 1 Peter 1:22
Sincere brotherly love. Love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
This theme of loving one another has stood out to me in other New Testament epistles. I think it stands out to me because it seems extreme and a little foreign. I question whether I see it lived out in my own life. Life is just so busy and scattered sometimes that it’s all I can do to take care of myself and my own family.
Paul says in 1 Timothy 1 that the goal of his instruction is love. He prays for the Philippians that their love would abound more and more. In Ephesians 5 he says we must walk in love as Christ set the example. And now in 1 Peter, Peter repeats this theme.
I need God to examine my heart. I need to question whether I prioritize loving one another above all else. Above gaining knowledge and above exercising certain gifts.
This 90 Day Read is almost over but has it resulted in me growing in love for others? This is the goal.
“Above all, love each other deeply…” 1 Peter 4:8
